Our Story

A story that began in 1974, built across three generations.

D’HERITAGE is a Portuguese clothing brand from Vila de Cucujães, in Aveiro. It comes from a family that spent more than fifty years making shirts and uniforms, and from a decision not to let that knowledge disappear.

For five decades, garments left our doors carrying other brands’ labels. Never our own. What we make today is the result of that practice, and of one change: we now sign what we make.

October 1974

After years working as a travelling trader, learning the business one customer at a time, Mário Pimenta Gonçalves founded his own company in Vila de Cucujães. His wife, Maria Emília Pinho, ran the day-to-day of the business, the part of the story that usually goes untold.

The company made shirts and uniforms for other brands. Mário built it client by client, at a time when every order still had to be earned in person, with the product in hand. The team grew, the orders multiplied and the level of demand grew with them. At its height, the company employed more than thirty people.

1999

José Henrique Gonçalves, Mário’s son and Diogo’s father, joined the company’s management. Raised within the reality of the business, between client visits, supplier negotiations, warehouse management and product development, his learning came directly from the demands of the industry.

“I grew up watching the factory being built from the ground up. Between the 1970s and 1990s, there were few manufacturers capable of meeting the market’s standards. There was something in the seriousness with which every piece was treated that was impossible to ignore.

“I remember the journeys, waking up at 4 a.m., travelling without GPS or motorways to reach the first client in Lisbon by 9 a.m. We would deliver products, present new samples and return with a handshake and new orders. There was a sense of challenge and drive that shaped us every day. I dedicated my entire professional life to this company and I do not regret a single day.”

2022

Mário Pimenta Gonçalves died in 2022, without ever having seen his own label in a shop window.

2024

The accumulated pressure on the Portuguese textile sector, intensified by the pandemic, rising costs and the expansion of fast fashion, ultimately forced the company to close. When dozens of companies close at the same time, clients and suppliers close with them, and you lose on both sides. A fifty year chapter came to an end.

D’HERITAGE represents a new chapter in this story

It is born from a refusal to give up. Founded by Diogo Henrique Gonçalves, grandson of Mário and son of José, and run today by father and son together.

The company closed. The knowledge did not. What stayed was the eye for a fabric, the judgement of a pattern, the difference between a seam that lasts and one that does not, and the relationships with the people who make the clothes. Our pieces are cut and made in the same region as always, in three partner workshops we have worked with for years.

Each piece reflects this entire journey, not as memory, but as a standard of quality.

“I grew up inside a factory, surrounded by conversations about suppliers, production and difficult decisions. I saw my grandfather build and my father continue. When we closed, there was a void, the kind that comes from believing the legacy would carry on. There was no other option but to start again.”
